I gra\u00addua\u00adted from Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in the mid-1980s. This was a boom time for the Huma\u00adni\u00adties and Social Sci\u00aden\u00adces. I inscri\u00adbed mys\u00adelf at the phi\u00adlo\u00adso\u00adphi\u00adcal-histo\u00adri\u00adcal Facul\u00adty of the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Ber\u00adne, and noted how most depart\u00adments were strugg\u00adling with the influx of young enthu\u00adsiasts like mys\u00adelf hoping to get deeper insights into the evo\u00adlu\u00adti\u00adon and inner workings of some\u00adthing cal\u00adled \u201csocie\u00adty\u201d \u2013 not real\u00adly worry\u00ading too much about our employa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty and the mar\u00adke\u00adta\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty of our know\u00adledge \u2013 which, in my case didn\u2019t plea\u00adse my grand\u00adfa\u00adther, a sta\u00adtus-ori\u00aden\u00adted prag\u00adma\u00adtist, who would have much pre\u00adfer\u00adred to see me in medi\u00adci\u00adne or law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is against this back\u00adground that I took inte\u00adrest in a recent num\u00adber crun\u00adching exer\u00adcise by the Swiss Aca\u00adde\u00admy of Huma\u00adni\u00adties and Social Sci\u00aden\u00adces. The aca\u00adde\u00admy \u2013 for the first time \u2013 has loo\u00adked into enroll\u00adment in the Huma\u00adni\u00adties and Social Sci\u00aden\u00adces in Swiss hig\u00adher edu\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon sin\u00adce the 1980s, and its report \u2013 \u201cStu\u00addi\u00aden\u00adwahl. Zah\u00adlen und Trends in den Gei\u00adstes- und Sozi\u00adal\u00adwis\u00adsen\u00adschaf\u00adten\u201c<\/a> \u2013 was pre\u00adsen\u00adted ear\u00adlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we let the\u00adse num\u00adbers speak: against a strong abso\u00adlu\u00adte and rela\u00adti\u00adve growth of the MINT dis\u00adclipli\u00adnes \u2013 that have recei\u00adved favorable poli\u00adcy tre\u00adat\u00adment \u2013 stu\u00addent enroll\u00adment in histo\u00adry, lan\u00adguages, lite\u00adra\u00adtu\u00adre, anthro\u00adpo\u00adlo\u00adgy, phi\u00adlo\u00adso\u00adphy \u2013 the tra\u00addi\u00adtio\u00adnal core of the huma\u00adni\u00adties clu\u00adster \u2013 have shrunk both in rela\u00adti\u00adve (from 13% in 2003 to 4% in 2025) and in abso\u00adlu\u00adte terms. The lar\u00adger clu\u00adster of huma\u00adni\u00adties and social sci\u00aden\u00adces still decrea\u00adse, in rela\u00adti\u00adve terms, 41% in 2003 to 29% in 2025. Within that lar\u00adge chunk of disci\u00adpli\u00adnes, socio\u00adlo\u00adgy and psy\u00adcho\u00adlo\u00adgy still thri\u00adve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The report has an inte\u00adre\u00adst\u00ading chap\u00adter on \u201crele\u00advant moti\u00adva\u00adtions\u201d. I find \u2013 per\u00adhaps unsur\u00adpri\u00adsin\u00adgly \u2013 only litt\u00adle chan\u00adge com\u00adpared to my gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon of huma\u00adni\u00adties stu\u00addents. The moti\u00adva\u00adtions the report says are \u201cintrin\u00adsic\u201d \u2013 inte\u00adrest, enthu\u00adsi\u00adasm, the liber\u00adty of a wide open stu\u00addy field, social and poli\u00adti\u00adcal enga\u00adge\u00adment. They are not based on money, sta\u00adtus and the labor mar\u00adket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Only that today, stu\u00addents seem to be more inse\u00adcu\u00adre about pro\u00ads\u00adpec\u00adti\u00adve employment. A care\u00ader advi\u00adsor inter\u00adview\u00aded for the report thinks that the popu\u00adla\u00adri\u00adty of socio\u00adlo\u00adgy and psy\u00adcho\u00adlo\u00adgy stems from their empi\u00adri\u00adcal approach, which helps to ease the anxie\u00adty cau\u00adsed by the open\u00adness and ambi\u00adgui\u00adties of the \u201cinter\u00adpre\u00adti\u00adve disci\u00adpli\u00adnes\u201d. That\u2019s an inte\u00adre\u00adst\u00ading hypo\u00adthe\u00adsis on the psy\u00adcho\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal effect of the\u00adse more gene\u00adra\u00adli\u00adzing stu\u00addy are\u00adas on stu\u00addents \u2013 are\u00adas that do not requi\u00adre the \u201cacqui\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon of a regio\u00adnal lan\u00adguage or the pre\u00adsence in a local archi\u00adve\u201d, as the Academy\u2019s secre\u00adta\u00adry Ms. Lea Hal\u00adler is quo\u00adted as say\u00ading in the Tages-Anzei\u00adger<\/a>.
